When the Analytics Sheet Is Blank: A Beat Writer’s Discipline in Football

One evening in Shenzhen, I opened a 'Stage One analysis' file sent by a colleague. No heat maps, no passing charts, no sprint data, no market values. Every column simply said 'N/A – insufficient information.' I read it again and again, hoping to uncover a hidden number. There was none. In this essay, I reflect on what a football reporter should do when the data sheet is a total blank. Rather than inventing stories or chasing hot takes, a disciplined writer acknowledges the void and treats it as legitimate news. Drawing on my experience covering isolated training camps during COVID in Shenzhen and my 2026 World Cup internship data–driven analysis, I argue that silence and missing data have their own rhythm, and sometimes the most honest phrase in journalism is: 'we don't know yet.'.
